Mayo iss a small town located in Lafayette County in Northwest Florida with a population of approximately 1,000 residents. Located a few miles from the banks of the Suwannee River, Mayo is the place to go if you are seeking lazy days filled with relaxation and quiet solitude.
Lafayette (pronounced la-fay´-it) is one of the states smallest counties – in both size and population. Much of the southern and western portions of the county are wetlands, with the town of Mayo being the only incorporated place in the County. However, this doesnt mean you won't find things to do to keep you busy. Fishing, boating, kayaking and swimming are all available on the Suwannee River, which is designated a wild, blackwater river and is 266 miles long. A major attraction of the river is the Suwannee River Wilderness Trail, which encompasses 207 river miles from Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park to the Gulf of Mexico.
Lafayette County is also home to Lafayette Blue Springs State Park, seven miles northwest of Mayo off U.S. 27. This park offers picnicking, swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, kayaking, canoeing, fishing, boating and hiking. Other nearby attractions include Troy Springs State Park, the site of one of the states 33 first magnitude springs, and Peacock Springs State Park, with its 288 acres of springs, sinkholes, swimming, snorkeling and picnicking.
