The Plantation Loop

Back to previous page          Home

This is one of the prettiest parts of Florida, and a bit into Southern Georgia.

There's Rolling hills, moss covered spreading oaks and real Old South Culture and History.

You're in the old cotton and quail hunting plantation country here with estates that will boggle your mind. This is actually a little known part of the country but widely known to many of the rich and famous, being a retreat for many years.

Thomasville may not be in North Florida but its just got to be part of this fantastic loop and it is just a little ways outside in the beautiful red soil and flowered country of Southern Georgia. Known as "Rose City", its luscious in the Spring with the annual Rose Festival usually in April. See www.downtownthomasville.com for details.

Pebble Hill Plantation, just a few miles outside of Thomasville, is one of the original plantations restored for use and tours by the public. Don't miss this!

Monticello is rich in history and some of the nicest Old Southern homes you'll ever see. A little town with the typical courthouse square and Opera House just across the street.

Havana is probably bypassed by most tourists if they don't know what's there. Visited heavily by Tallahassee people on weekends for the luxurious antique and gift shopping - open on Sundays!

And, of course, the Florida State Capital, Tallahassee with its mixture of old and new in the downtown section along with the 22 story capital building and observation deck. With significant historical interest and many impressive tourist attractions, the city of Tallahassee offers a number of period homes and plantations for Tallahassee tourists and visitors to explore. Tallahassee's main tourist attractions often include luscious, landscaped gardens as well.

The section on the map above, Highway 153, named Orchard Pond Road, is a dirt road, mostly red clay soil with a bit of brown sandy soil at the west end, is a beautiful trip through the back roads of Florida.

The interactive map linked below includes other great "Old South" places to visit in the Tallahassee area. Numbers 6 through 9 on the map are places not mentioned here but well worth some extra time. Just enlarge the interactive map with the + button and drag it, using the mouse, with the Tallahassee area in the center. This is worth a side trip and staying over to see it all.

They're also listed in the links to the Tallahassee Trust for Historic Preservation and Tallahassee Natural Tourist Attractions below.
