This is easily an all days trip if you make all the stops but its well worth it. The Nature Coast of Florida, often referred to as the Big Bend Coast, is one of the most fascinating places in the country. Don't look for the beautiful white sand beaches here as in the lower part of Florida or the Panhandle to the west. The coastline here is made up mostly of moody and mysterious salt marshes changing constantly with the light. Steinhatchee is one of the nicest places to visit you'll ever see with some great restaurants, specially Roy's, a local mainstay forever! The Steinhatchee Falls are the only waterfalls in this part of the country. Not too big but spectacular in their beauty. The surrounding area is great for a picnic or rest and relaxation stop. The Road to Nowhere winds through more great salt marshes ending up in one of the most unusual display of rocks in the world. Very unusual and no one knows how this area was really formed. The rest of the trip up the Taylor County Gulf Coast is a series of side trips to spectacular scenery on the Gulf of Mexico. Don't forget to bring a camera and maybe even a bathing suit. The most populated of these and most touristy is Keaton Beach, actually having a small, but nice, sand beach. The rest of the stops are very secluded and little known to all but the most adventurous explorer. |
